Bringing a soft touch to hygiene products

Our lives are becoming increasingly fast-paced and dynamic. Whether looking at personal hygiene solutions or leisure and living environments, today we have the ability to ensure that any activity is achieved with comfort, resistance and durability in mind.

Since first becoming commercially viable in Europe and North America in the 1940s, diapers have become smaller, lighter, more economical and easier to use. But the quest for greater comfort is still widespread today.

Since first becoming commercially viable in Europe and North America in the 1940s, diapers have become smaller, lighter, more economical and easier to use.

But the quest for greater comfort is still widespread today. Ask Barbara Bonavoglia, Dow Application Technology Leader for Health & Hygiene products, and she will tell you that: “Technological innovations are essential in the sector. Consumers demand now more than ever products that enhance the quality of life and are comfortable to use.”

As with any technological breakthrough, the search to provide a better solution to the market, began with a first encounter between two industry partners – raw material supplier, Dow, and machine manufacturer, Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H).

“When we met with Dow we were looking at developing an innovative breathable film formulation with excellent processability and performance,” says Ali Hassan, Regional Manager Technical Sales, at W&H. “The Dow team showed strong engagement in the project and proposed interesting film downgauging options that do not compromise the film’s performance. Sustainability is important for us, so this was a welcomed proposal. Furthermore, the team showed a strong passion for collaboration, which for us is all about being open and trialing new solutions in order to innovate.”

Globally, demand is growing for hygiene products that offer excellent mechanics and consider skin health requirements. And with new, thinner blown machine direction orientation (MDO) breathable film powered by DOWLEXTM, Dow and W&H have created a solution that meets the needs of consumers worldwide.

“In developing really innovative solutions, two heads are always better than one,” adds Bonavoglia. “And in this collaboration, a double layer of expertise and trust to create a game-changing solution was invaluable.”

The result was not only excellent mechanical performance and processability, but a final super-thin breathable backsheet film that brings a soft touch for sensitive skin and maximum comfort.

The team showed a strong passion for collaboration, which for us is all about being open and trialing new solutions in order to innovate.
