From blank sheet to industry revolution in efficiency, speed and savings

With one billion more mouths to feed by 2050, food is a critical resource and food preservation is key. This is driving the need for more convenient and sustainable packaging to ensure food is kept fresh for our tables.

A blank sheet of paper - it’s not much to start from is it? But when Dow and Nordmeccanica sat down together at Pack Studios that’s all it took to come up with one of the biggest innovations in packaging lamination in half a century.

Well, that and a history of a successful and trusted working relationship, incredible skills and specialist knowledge. But a breakthrough this big doesn’t happen every day.

“From the signing of the joint development agreement between Dow and Nordmeccanica to the launch of this revolutionary technology – it has been a meeting of minds and a can-do attitude” says Marco Re Fraschini, F&SP T&SD Leader for EMEA at Dow, “together we were able to look at this challenge as the first step to many more solutions”.

“SYMBIEX™ Solventless Adhesive, Dow’s new ultra-fast curing adhesive technology, combined with the innovative Duplex SL One Shot™ lamination line from Nordmeccanica, redefines packaging lamination”, says Roberto Rigobello, Marketing Director for A&FM EMEA, “offering converters best-in-class conversion efficiency improvements, shorter time-to-market, and total conversion cost reductions, and sustainability.”

“Conventional processes have some fundamental limitations – we wanted to challenge those standards and do better. Out of all the different options available on the market – solvent based, solventless and water based – none managed to combine bond strength, speed and cost in one place. That’s where we came in.” says Vincenzo Cerciello, VP for technology at Nordmeccanica.

The improvements down the value chain are remarkable. Giancarlo Caimmi, Commercial Director at Nordmeccanica emphasizes that “cutting the production time from four days to one has not only meant better production capacity but also improved responsiveness to market demands and increased flexibility at all levels of the value chain”

Great masterpieces can come from a blank sheet of paper after all.
