Dow took the lead to educate and engage students during the Dubai leg of the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association’s (GPCA) Waste-Free Environment (WFE) campaign. This was just one of several community outreach activities that took place across the city in February 2018.
As one of the leading sponsors of the campaign, Dow held an interactive presentation on the value of packaging to a group of 100 pupils of the GEMS Metropole School. Hussein Soliman, Senior TS&D Engineer at Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics spoke about the importance of flexible packaging for protecting food, keeping it fresh for longer and the significance of recycling.
“Did you know that every day around the globe 1.3 billion tonnes of food gets wasted before it reaches your mouth?” Hussein said starting the discussion, “This is equivalent to one third of all food produced for human consumption – a lot, don’t you think?”
“Now, this is where food preservation through sophisticated packaging kicks in, prolonging the shelf-life, for instance, of a steak by up to 10 days. And keep in mind that better packaging can reduce food waste by up to 50%,” Hussein concluded.
The response was great, the kids were engaging and took part in a small quiz. The education session was a collaboration effort between GPCA and the regional and packaging teams as well as the Young Innovative Professionals (YIP) network from Dow.
“With its 2025 sustainability goals, Dow is committed to advance a Circular Economy by delivering solutions to close the resource loops in key markets,” commented Izzat Midani, Account Manager Adhesives for Middle East and Africa at Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics as well as Chair of Dow’s Young Innovative Professionals network at Dow in U.A.E.
“And as a leader in sustainable plastic packaging we need to go beyond by continuously educating present and future generations on the value of packaging and a responsible way of using it – as it is done excellently through this event. I am proud to have helped organize it.”
According to Moosa AL-Moosa, President for Dow U.A.E. “This initiative furthers Dow’s STEM advancement efforts in the United Arab Emirates and strengthens our relationship with local partners”.
He also thanked the YIP network and the packaging business for “showcasing Dow’s expertise and commitment to developing sustainable environmental solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.”
Waste Free Environment (WFE) is an annual global event and an important environmental campaign launched by the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) in 2013. WFE promotes recycling and encourages a more responsible attitude toward litter disposal and the need for the community to respond to environmental issues.
The Dubai event is sponsored by industry players, among them Dow Chemical, with WFE events in the broader region hosted by some of the top petrochemical companies across the Gulf. The campaign runs across the six GCC states, India, Morocco, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States.
